Seriously, what kind of bullshit is it that you have to beat the game twice just to get the true ending? Just getting to the first ending is a challenge in and of itself, the Princess can stay captured for all I care.

Ghost N Goblins for NES is one of the hardest games I've ever played and I've played Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man (I've beaten those) but at least those games didn't make you have to play the game TWICE in a row.

Ghost N Goblins for SNES has limited continues. LIMITED CONTINUES.

The one that just came out for Switch, I'm trying but oh God, is it hard.

It's alright, you don't need to. I encourage you to play good games instead.

The NES version of GnG is horrible. Why even play it lol.

The arcade version is much much better.

Ghouls n Ghosts is still super hard but much more doable IMO.

I enjoyed Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins on psp. That one was doable on normal.

The versions on Switch virtual console have scumable saves and you can rewind. That's how I beat them both (NES and SNES) with the real enidngs too.

The beating it twice requirement is like the biggest 'fuck you're, lol

The game is way simpler when you approach each screen like a puzzle and take your time. That said, doing it twice is a slog and I could only bring myself to do it once on the NES, it did feel good tho.

That's why you play Demon's Crest (available on the Switch SNES app), where the Red Arremer is the protagonist.

Infinite continues, manageable difficulty, short enough that you can 100% the game to fight the true final boss and unlock a password that lets you fight the even truer final boss, and since it's on Switch you don't need the password system to save, you can just save state whenever you want.

Play the spiritual successors, Maximo, instead.

There's nothing wrong with using save states or other cheats if they make games more enjoyable for you.

These are some of my favorite games of all time, but seriously, they are way too hard and frustrating to force your way through if you don't love them. You have my blessing to move on to something you enjoy more. Games should be fun!

I mean, it's playable. It's fun... it's just... hard.

I think AVGN said it best.

Managed the one on Sega Genesis. I had different reflexes then. Doubt I could do it now.

I don't know if I've ever made it past the first level.

Ghosts To Glory is tough, especially with its annoying camera, but it's definitely not something that's insurmountable.

Army of Zin, though? Honestly for the most part it's easy. And VERY player friendly. You can do things like shop and start off with 4 health bars before doing a boss fight. Honestly it's my favorite platformer of all time

Ah, admittedly I've only played (some of) the first game. Interesting to hear the sequel was more doable.

It definitely is. There's shops you can access in almost every level, where you can buy more Grim Coins aka revives, upgrade your weapon/equipment/Grim meter, and buy health bars. You can save at any time (and it doesn't cost anything). Running out of continues doesn't make you restart the whole game it just gives you a Game Over. When you juuuust miss a jump, Maximo basically slams his weapon into the ledge to help lift himself up. It's significantly more player-friendly.

I never found the games to be fun enough to endure the difficulty and slowdown.

I wouldn't waste my time playing a hard ass game these days without getting a achievement or trophy.

Just being honest!

I love the series and I love playing them but I've never fully beat any of them. The new one is great but I don't think I have the persistence to beat the 2nd round of levels.

Ghosts 'n Goblins is one of my favorite series and I think the first game is really excellent. Don't play the NES version; it's crap and is probably harder than the arcade original.

Also, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts' limited continues are kind of a trick, too: just by picking up the money bag items you'll always get more credits than you lose. This isn't to say it's an easy game but you aren't realistically in danger of running out of continues.

NES GnG I don't think is worth anyone's time these days. I look at it like a tiger electronics port of the original, why waste your time when you got the real thing?

Capcom Generation Chronicles of Arthur comes with the arcade versions of Ghosts 'n Goblins and Ghosts 'n Ghouls with unlimited continues and this is how I played them. It has Super Ghosts 'n Ghouls which I also played to completion but tbh it was bad, I share your opinion about limited continues and I think they're pretty bullshit but even beyond that it's not as well constructed of a game as Goblins or especially Ghouls. On the other hand, repeating the game with the Shield/Cross and Psycho Canon in Goblins and Ghouls I found satisfying because my skill level drastically improved by the time I cleared the game once, I knew what to look out for and how to react etc. Felt good! Love these games.

Also check out Ghosts n' Demons if you ever clear those and want more. :D

I'm with you on the NES version. I've also beaten a lot of "hard" NES games like the Castlevanias and Ninja Gaidens, but I just can't beat Ghosts 'n Goblins.

The new one on Switch is actually a lot more approachable. It's still difficult, but it is beatable. I'd encourage you to at least give it the old college try.

  • #31
I have a lot of versions...NES, SNES, GEN and I can't beat a single one for the life of me.

It's on my bucketlist to at least finish one.

I finished super ghouls and ghosts one time on the snes. Meaning, I killed the last boss and then shut it off before starting the second run through.

That was plenty for me.

No second time through thank you. Once was enough.
